The full form of MLA is Member of the Legislative Assembly is an elected representative of the people of an electoral district (constituency) in the Legislative Assembly of a state in the Indian Union. An MLA is a member of the State Legislature and is a direct election by the people of the constituency. The MLA is responsible for representing their constituents’ interests in the Legislative Assembly, introducing, debating, and voting on legislation, and presenting their constituents’ views in the assembly. The MLA may also conduct constituency work, such as engaging with local stakeholders on issues that concern the members and their constituency.
Nominated Member of the Legislative Assembly for States and Union Territories
The Governor of a state or a Union Territory appoints nominated Members of the Legislative Assembly. Nominated MLAs are selected to represent the interests of various sections of society, including women, minorities, backward classes, and Anglo-Indians.
Nominated MLAs do not have a direct election by the people and do not have a vote in the assembly. On the advice of the state’s Chief Minister(CM), they are appointed by the Governor and serve a term of 6 years. The number of nominated MLAs varies from state to state. In some states, there are no nominated MLAs, while in others, they can form a sizable part of the total membership of the assembly.
Qualification
To be eligible to become a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in India, a person must meet the following criteria:
- Be a citizen of India.
- Be at least 25 years of age.
- Be a registered voter in the constituency they wish to represent.
- Not hold any office of profit under the Government of India or any local Government of any State or other. authority subject to the control of any of the said Governments.
- Not be mentally or physically incapacitated.
- Not be an undischarged insolvent.
- Not be convicted and sentenced to imprisonment for an offense involving moral turpitude.
- Not be disqualified by any law in force.
Term
A Member of the Legislative Assembly is an elected representative of a constituency in the Legislative Assembly of a state in the Indian Union. The MLA is a member of the state legislature responsible for making laws for the state. The term of an MLA is five years unless the Legislative Assembly dissolves before the period’s completion. The qualifications for becoming an MLA are the same as for becoming a Member of Parliament (MP). MLAs have an election by the people of their constituency in an election.
