What is the Full Form of NEET?
The full form of NEET is the National Entrance cum Eligibility Test. NEET is an entrance examination organized for students in India who wish to pursue undergraduate medical and dental courses in government or private institutions. This examination is a standard entrance test for all medical and dental colleges across the country.
History of NEET
NEET can be traced back to the year 2006 when the Medical Council of India (MCI) and the Dental Council of India (DCI) came up with the idea of having a common entrance exam for all medical and dental colleges in India. The concept behind NEET was to bring uniformity to the admission process and eliminate the multiple entrance exams for which students had to appear. In 2012, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, issued a notification for organizing the NEET exam. The first NEET was conducted in 2013, replacing all the state-level and institution-level medical entrance exams. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducted the first NEET.
Organizing Body of NEET
NEET is organized by the National Testing Agency (NTA). NTA is an autonomous body established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and the Government of India in 2018. The main objective of the NTA is to conduct entrance exams for higher education institutions transparently and efficiently. Before the establishment of NTA, the responsibility of conducting NEET was with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
Eligibility Criteria for NEET
The eligibility criteria for NEET are as follows:
- The candidate must have completed 17 years of age on or before December 31st of the year of admission. There is no upper age limit to appear in NEET.
- The candidate must have passed the Class 12th examination or an equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as subjects.
- A minimum of 50% marks in aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology in the Class 12th examination or an equivalent examination. The minimum percentage required for candidates in the SC/ST/OBC category is 40%.
- A candidate can appear for NEET a maximum of three times in a consecutive academic year.
- The candidate must be an Indian National or an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI).
- Indian students who have studied abroad can also appear for NEET, provided they have completed their Class 12th examination from a recognized board in India.
Exam Pattern of NEET
The Exam pattern for NEET is as follows:
- NEET is conducted offline (pen-and-paper based), and the language of the question paper is available in 11 languages, including English, Hindi, and others.
- The total duration of the NEET is 3 hours.
- NEET consists of multiple-choice questions.
- The NEET exam covers three main subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
- There are a total of 180 questions in the NEET, with 45 questions from Physics, 90 from Botany and Zoology, and 45 from Chemistry.
- For each correct answer, candidates will be awarded four marks. For each incorrect answer, one mark will be deducted.
Documents Required to apply for NEET Exam

Reservation Criteria for NEET
The reservation criteria for NEET are as follows:
- Scheduled Caste (SC): 15% of the seats are reserved for SC category candidates.
- Scheduled Tribe (ST): 7.5% of the seats are reserved for ST category candidates.
- Other Backward Classes (OBC-NCL): 27% of the seats are reserved for OBC-NCL category candidates.
- Physically Handicapped (PH): 3% of the seats are reserved for PH category candidates.
- Economically Weaker Section (EWS): 10% of seats are reserved for EWS category candidates.
